A New Generation of Collecting

Happy New Year to all Christopher’s Rare Coins Newsletter subscribers!  The rare coin and precious metals markets in 2015 reflected a mostly negative pattern. Typically, a long period of downward movement makes potential buyers leery and promotes inaction. The smart buyers, however, see this as an opportunity to buy at bargain levels or cost average down on their current holdings. Like most investments, it is suggested that you buy for the long term and not a quick profit.

Coin collecting is a passion of everyone’s at Christopher’s. A good share of collectors began when they were kids. Not too long ago, before computers and video games, many kids had collecting hobbies such as coins, stamps, rocks, bugs etc. I can remember going through my parents and relatives change looking for coins to put in my collection. With computers and the internet, a big part of the thrill of coin collecting has vanished. Instead of collectors going to local coin shops or coin shows, they sit at home for hours on end pointing and clicking. Today’s youth also are involved in so many sports and other activities that collecting coins is the last thing on their mind.

Coin collecting is an age-old hobby that is not only fun, but also very educational. Every type of coin and currency that has ever been produced has some sort of historical value. The history of the United States can literally be traced through our coinage.  To start out the New Year, I encourage you to stop by our store and take a look at the vast variety of coins and currency we have on display.  Any one of our knowledgeable staff members would be more than happy to visit with you about coins or currency and give suggestions on what area of the hobby might interest you.  What a great opportunity this would be, than to bring in a young collector and encourage them to begin a hobby that they can enjoy for the rest of their life.  At Christopher’s, we have coins and currency for all budgets and tastes.

Another way to enjoy the hobby would be to attend one or more coin shows that are going on throughout the state.  You can find a listing of these shows at the Iowa Numismatic Association website: ina@anaclubs.org

Happy collecting and see you soon.
